Louis Maynahonah-Archilta
February 13, 2026
Louis Maynahonah-Archilta, age 84, was born on August 12, 1941, to Melinda Klinekole Archilta and Oliver Maynahonah-Archilta. At the age of two and a half, Louis was raised by his father, Oliver, and his beloved and cherished mother, Juanita Marcia Bointy-Bigbow, who played a significant role in shaping the man he became. Louis passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 7:15 a.m. at Ardmore Mercy Hospital in Ardmore, Oklahoma.
Louis attended Boone Elementary School and continued his education in the Anadarko Public School system, graduating from Anadarko High School in 1960. From an early age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, even operating his own shoe-shining business in front of Wendall’s.
On May 27, 1967, Louis married the love of his life, Peggy Ann Koomsa. He often joked, “I taught her how to drive, and she never stopped driving anymore.” Together, they shared an amazing life and raised seven children: Aaron Kenard Koomsa Sr., Misty Joy Komesataddle, Henrietta Juanita Maynahonah, Nellie Ann Botone, Keesa Rae Bullcoming, Louis Maynahonah Jr., and Melinda Kay Hudson.
Throughout his life, Louis held many places of employment and was known as a hardworking and dedicated man. He worked with the BIA Road Construction, the Haskell Indian School Maintenance Department, and Kiowa Tribe Construction. In 2010, Louis was voted in as Chairman of the Apache Tribes, where he led with integrity, humility, and a deep love for his people. He also served as Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Chairman for the KCA Land Use Committee. Louis was a true and genuine leader who firmly believed in “putting the people first,” and he carried that belief into every role he held.
One of Louis’s greatest joys was his love for quarter horse racing and caring for his horses. He took great pride in his champion horses, including Bayou Barlee, Go Cookie Deep, his beloved red horse Krystal—well known for her knack for escaping the corral—and his horse Thunder. These passions brought him immense happiness and fulfillment.
Louis was a devoted OU football fan, even though his daughters graduated from OSU, and he proudly supported the Dallas Cowboys and the OKC Thunder. He enjoyed watching classic westerns such as Bonanza and Gunsmoke and had a deep love for country music.
Louis was blessed with a large and loving family. He had 22 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Peggy Ann Koomsa-Maynahonah; his father, Oliver Maynahonah-Archilta; his biological mother, Melinda Klinekole-Archilta; his mother, Juanita Marcia Bointy-Bigbow; his daughters, Henrietta Juanita Maynahonah and Keesa Rae Bullcoming; his son, Freddy Maynahonah; and his sisters, Millicent Maynahonah-Tapedo and Anita Blackbear.
He is survived by his children: Aaron Koomsa Sr., Misty Joy Komesataddle, Nellie Ann Botone, Louis Maynahonah Jr., and Melinda Kay Hudson; along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will continue to honor his legacy.
Louis will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership, love, humor, and service to his people. His life was lived with purpose and meaning, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
Rest easy, Louis “Dake” Maynahonah, beloved Papa Lou. You will never be forgotten.
