Bruce Dean Poolaw

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bruce Dean Poolaw, a beloved member of the Kiowa Tribe, a passionate advocate for education, and a dedicated public servant.
Born on October 1, 1941, to Justin & Lucille Poolaw at the Lawton Indian hospital in Lawton, OK. Bruce peacefully left this world on November 20, 2023, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was proud graduate of Mountain View High School class of 1959, Bruce’s commitment to education remained unwavering throughout his life. A devoted member of the Kiowa Tribe, Bruce’s pride in his heritage was evident in every aspect of his life. He was an avid supporter of the University of Oklahoma, displaying a true passion for the Sooners as a dedicated fan. Bruce furthered his education at the esteemed University of Oklahoma, where he earned two master’s degrees—one in Native American Studies and another in Human Relations.
Bruce was an active and cherished member of the Rainy Mountain Kiowa Baptist Church, where his faith played a central role in shaping his character and guiding his actions. In service to his tribe, he served with distinction as the Kiowa Tribal Administrator and Commissioner on the Kiowa Housing Authority, contributing significantly to the well-being of his community.
A man of many talents and interests, Bruce dedicated 15 years of his life to the Mountain View School Board, where his insights and passion for education left an indelible mark. His commitment extended to the Masonic Lodge, where he was a valued member, and his career in law enforcement spanned various locations across Oklahoma.
Bruce Dean Poolaw leaves behind a legacy of service, dedication, and a profound love for his community. He will be remembered as a loving family man, a steadfast friend, and a tireless advocate for the causes he held dear. His impact on the lives he touched will resonate for generations to come.
Survivors include his companion, Sharon; sons, Patrick, Dean John and Charlie; grandchildren: Dakota (was raised by Bruce), Donald Justin and Dyani and numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Toni, Myrna and Rhonda; a host of nephews; a special nephew, Kiowa George Poolaw; nieces, cousins and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen; parents, Justin and Lucille Poolaw; brothers, George and Ron; sister, Arlene; daughters, Deanna and Denise; sons, Dale, Donnie, Danny and Michael.
Funeral service were held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 24, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Mountain View, OK. Interment was in the New Rainy Mountain Cemetery in Mountain View, OK.
Services were under the direction of Ray and Martha’s Funeral Home of Mountain View, OK.
